How to remove bathroom mould in Birmingham homes (and stop it coming back)

Birmingham's older housing stock and seasonal damp mean mould is one of the most common cleaning problems we see. Here is how to remove it properly and, more importantly, how to stop it returning.
Safety first
- Open windows and run the extractor fan
- Wear gloves and a mask for large patches
- Never mix bleach with other cleaners
For light mould on tiles and grout
- Spray a diluted bleach solution or dedicated mould remover
- Leave for 10 to 15 minutes
- Scrub grout with an old toothbrush
- Rinse thoroughly and dry
For painted walls and ceilings
- Do not scrub hard or you will damage the paint
- Use a mould remover suitable for painted surfaces
- Repaint with mould-resistant paint once fully dry
Why it keeps coming back
- Ventilation is more important than the product
- Dry the shower and tiles after use
- Keep the window open or the fan running for 20 minutes after bathing
- Fix any leaks behind sealant or under the bath
